ALVEOLOPLASTY

An alveoloplasty is a surgical procedure where the oral surgeon reshapes and
smooths the jaw bone ridge after a dental extraction and/or before placing implants
or dentures in order to avoid sharp edges or bone spikes that may hurt the patient.
Smoothing out your jaw bone prepares your mouth for a successful replacement of your missing teeth.

Your dentist will be starting your treatment with a complete oral and radiographic
evaluation, then he will take a CT Scan to determinate the surgery approach.

First, your oral surgeon will numb the surgical areas using local anesthetic to
avoid any discomfort during the procedure. Then, he will do an incision in the gum to
access the bone ridge.  After this, he will use special instruments to smoothen and
reshape your bone, then he will place a few stitches to close the incision and the
surgery procedure is then complete.

After your procedure, your dentist will give you after care instructions and a
prescription with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and pain killers. After a
couple weeks you should return for a post-surgical appointment for a checkup and to
have your stitches removed.

When a tooth is extracted, the dental socket heals over the course of the next couple
weeks. However, the edentulous area may be uneven or bumpy and this means that
the area may not be ready for a missing tooth replacement, such as a bridge,
implant or crown. Your dentist will be able to identify if you need this procedure and
he will provide recommendations on when it should be performed to achieve the best results.

-Non-healing area after extraction

-Irritation of specific oral areas when using dentures or after dental extractions

-Increment of comfort while using partial or total dentures

-Stop pain by removing painful spikes of bone

-Help the healing of the gums by removing spikes or bumps of bone

An alveoloplasty is a common procedure designed to prevent complication after
tooth replacements. Once your jaw bone is smooth you will be ready to continue your dental treatment.
