Connecting the dots: Breast Cancer and Oral Health

White cell count

If the patient is already receiving chemotherapy is a fact that their white cell count will be low. As we might know the white cells are our body’s little knights who protect us from infections.

Is recommended that the patients notify the dentist about the undergoing chemotherapy before any dental procedure is done. If an invasive procedure is done with a low white cell count the risk of getting an infection and other complication is very high.

Communication

First is important that patient comes clear with the dentist about their overall health. Then when the disease is addressed, the dentist needs to make contact with the oncologist.

If the patient is coming for a regular checkup or just a dental cleaning, that is not a big deal. However, if the visit involves a major invasive dental work the communication between patient, dentist and oncologist should be on point.
